President John Dramani Mahama has commended NASA astronaut Christina Koch for her groundbreaking role in the Artemis II mission, noting her past as an exchange student at the University of Ghana.

He described Koch’s journey as a powerful source of inspiration for young Ghanaians.

The Artemis II mission features four astronauts—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—with Koch set to become the first woman to travel that far into space.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 9, 2026, President Mahama said her transformation from a student in Ghana to a member of the Artemis II crew is a moment of pride for the nation.

“I join the University of Ghana and the entire nation in celebrating NASA Astronaut Christina Koch on her historic selection for the Artemis II mission,” he stated.

Koch, the only woman on the mission, studied at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year, where she actively engaged in both academic and cultural life.

According to the President, her time in Accra helped shape her global outlook. “Her experience at Legon was more than academic; she embraced our culture and built a foundation of global citizenship right here in Ghana,” he noted.

President Mahama also highlighted Koch’s symbolic act of carrying the Ghanaian flag into space, describing it as a deeply meaningful moment for the country.

“Her gesture of taking the Ghanaian flag into space touched the hearts of many across the nation,” he added.

He further emphasized that Koch’s achievements—from her days at Legon to her role in space exploration—serve as a strong motivation for young people to pursue their dreams.

The President concluded by wishing Koch and her fellow astronauts a safe mission and return, expressing hope that their success will inspire future generations.
