Legendary football manager Mircea Lucescu has died at the age of 80, just five days after stepping down as head coach of the Romania national football team.

Lucescu resigned from his role last Thursday after falling ill ahead of a training session. He was later hospitalised and reportedly suffered a heart attack on Friday morning.

In a statement, the Romanian Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as “an absolute legend” who left an enduring mark on the country’s football.

Lucescu first managed Romania between 1981 and 1986, famously guiding the team to their first European Championship appearance in 1984. He returned for a second stint in 2024, with his final match being a narrow 1-0 play-off defeat to Turkey national football team, which ended Romania’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Over a remarkable managerial career spanning nearly five decades, Lucescu coached several top clubs, including Inter Milan, Galatasaray, Besiktas, Shakhtar Donetsk, Zenit St Petersburg, and Dynamo Kyiv, earning widespread respect for his tactical brilliance and longevity in the game.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Galatasaray praised him as a historic figure who delivered major successes, while Inter Milan expressed condolences to his family and loved ones.

As a player, Lucescu earned 64 caps for Romania and captained the national team at the 1970 World Cup. Romanian Football Federation president Razvan Burleanu described his death as “a black day for Romania and world football,” adding that Lucescu was not only a coach but a mentor and inspiration to generations.
