President John Dramani Mahama’s push for slavery reparations at the United Nations General Assembly drew overwhelming global support, but faced opposition from three countries—the United States, Argentina, and Israel.
During the vote held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, a total of 123 member states endorsed the motion, which calls for the recognition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime ever committed against humanity.
Despite the strong backing, the three nations voted against the resolution, while 52 countries chose to abstain following extensive deliberations.
The motion, spearheaded by Ghana, also urges the international community to pursue reparatory justice and take concrete steps to address the lasting impact of slavery.
