A petrol tanker exploded at Potsin Junction in the Gomoa East District early this morning, destroying a chop bar and triggering severe traffic congestion along the Kasoa–Cape Coast road.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on March 17, 2026. Fortunately, no deaths were reported, and the tanker driver reportedly escaped before the explosion.

According to reports, the tanker was traveling from Accra to the Central Region when it lost control on a section of the road under construction, overturned, and ignited.

A worker at the chop bar, which was engulfed by the flames, said she and her colleagues narrowly escaped with their lives. “We were preparing meals for the day around 3 a.m. when the tanker rolled over, and then we heard the explosion,” she recounted.

The owner of the chop bar, who has operated the facility since 1983, said he lost everything in the blaze.

The Kasoa–Cape Coast road is currently under construction, with some sections posing hazards to motorists.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Ghana Police Service are on-site managing the situation.

The explosion has caused heavy traffic gridlock on the busy highway, with movement severely restricted as emergency teams work to clear the scene.
