Ghana Adopts LC3 Cement Technology to Cut Costs, Reduce Imports, and Boost Local Production Value

- President Mahama announced the use of Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) to modernize local cement production
- The initiative aims to cut production costs, lower reliance on imported cement, and retain more value within the domestic economy
- The launch of the world’s largest calcined clay plant in Tema Free Zones Enclave positions Ghana as a regional leader in environmentally responsible cement production.
President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana is adopting Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC3) technology in cement production.
Speaking at the commissioning of the world’s largest calcined clay plant at the Free Zones Enclave in Tema, he said the initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions, lower production costs, cut reliance on imports, and ensure more value from cement production remains in the domestic economy.
President Mahama emphasized that the initiative would help reduce Ghana’s dependence on imports while ensuring that more value from cement production stays within the domestic economy.
Meanwhile, the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi, stated that Ghana is emerging as a leader in sustainable cement production in West Africa following the launch of the state-of-the-art facility by CBI Limited.
She added that the investment positions the Tema Free Zones Enclave – and Ghana more broadly – at the forefront of sustainable and environmentally responsible cement production globally.
