The General Secretary of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Kwesi Ernest, has clarified that the union’s GH¢500 donation to veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong was not intended to ridicule or diminish his legacy.

His comments follow public backlash after news of the donation surfaced, with some critics describing the amount as inadequate considering Yaw Sarpong’s longstanding contribution to Ghana’s gospel music industry.

Speaking on the matter, Kwesi Ernest explained that the gesture was symbolic and represented an initial show of support from the union. He stressed that MUSIGA’s intention was to stand in solidarity with the ailing musician during a difficult period, not to undermine his decades of impact.

According to him, the union operates within financial constraints and often relies on available resources to support members in times of need. He added that the GH¢500 contribution should not be interpreted as the full extent of assistance but rather as part of broader efforts to rally support for the gospel icon.

Yaw Sarpong, known for his influential ministry through music and decades of service to the gospel fraternity, has recently been the subject of public concern over his health and welfare, prompting calls for industry-wide support.

Kwesi Ernest urged the public and stakeholders in the creative arts sector to focus on collective efforts to assist the musician instead of criticising the union’s initial contribution. He reiterated MUSIGA’s commitment to the welfare of its members and respect for Yaw Sarpong’s enduring legacy.
