Erratic Power Supply Triggers Acute Water Shortage in Parts of Kumasi

Power fluctuations at key treatment plants disrupt water production, leaving residents without supply for days

Story Highlights
  • Several communities in Kumasi have been without running water for three consecutive days
  • Ghana Water Limited links the shortage to unstable electricity supply at major treatment plants
  • ECG says repairs have been completed, but water supply is yet to fully resume

Residents in several parts of the Greater Kumasi Metropolis are grappling with an acute water shortage, largely attributed to unstable power supply affecting water treatment operations.

For the past three days, consumers in areas such as Atonsu, Dichemso, Kwadaso and other parts of the metropolis have experienced a complete halt in water flow through their taps. The situation has placed significant strain on households, forcing some residents to rely on underground water sources within their communities to meet daily needs.

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the region has linked the shortage to persistent power fluctuations at key water treatment plants. According to the utility provider, unstable electricity supply to the Barekese Treatment Plant, the Owabi Treatment Plant, and the Achiase booster station has disrupted water production and distribution across the city.

GWL explained that the voltage levels currently being supplied to the treatment plants and booster stations are too low to support efficient production and distribution of potable water to households.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the region disclosed that the challenge stemmed from a fallen conductor on one of the transmission lines at the Bekwai Roundabout, which supplies power to the affected plants. The incident disrupted power distribution in the area.

ECG has since indicated that repair works have been completed and power restored. Despite this assurance, many households remain hopeful, waiting for water supply to resume to support both domestic and commercial activities
