Hon. Nana Asafo Adjei Ayeh, Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, has expressed strong support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and aspiring 2028 NPP Presidential Candidate, ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026 presidential primaries.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tanko on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV, he emphasized Bawumia’s competence, consistency, and suitability to lead the NPP.
“All the five NPP members contesting for the 2028 flagbearer are competent, but I will appeal to delegates to vote for Dr. Bawumia,” Hon. Asafo Adjei Ayeh said. He stressed that while he would not force anyone, he believes the delegates should support Bawumia.
Comparing Bawumia’s performance to President John Mahama’s in 2016, he said: “Mahama was abysmal, whereas Bawumia wasn’t the president who contested and lost. Many of the things voters opposed in previous elections were not his decisions. Unlike Mahama in 2016, he was the sitting president yet lost, while in 2024, the candidate who had lost previously won decisively with over 2 million votes.”
He also dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia is soft or lacks aggression, arguing, “Presidency requires tactfulness, not aggression. Mahama is not aggressive, yet he is president. Bawumia’s style is suited to leadership.”
Hon. Asafo Adjei Ayeh highlighted historical election trends in Ghana, noting how consistency on the ballot paper has often favored eventual winners.
“Following this trend, Bawumia is the next consistent candidate if the NPP wants to retain power. The trend favors him,” he said.
He concluded by acknowledging normal criticisms during campaigns, saying, “The things people say about Bawumia are normal in elections, but if key principles are missed, there will be a problem.”
