Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Ruben Amorim, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday.
The 40-year-old Portuguese had been in charge at Old Trafford for 14 months, but hinted at tensions with the club’s board following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
Amorim had repeatedly suggested he might leave when his contract expires in 2027 and expressed frustration over the club’s transfer plans, refusing to clarify recent comments ahead of the Leeds match.
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League, and while results improved compared to his first season—where the club finished 15th and missed out on European football—Amorim’s rigid tactics and formation choices often clashed with both fans and the club hierarchy.
“The club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” United said in a statement. “This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”
Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher will take interim charge for the upcoming clash against Burnley on Wednesday.
