Minority Leader cites factual errors and outdated ministry references in budget debate

Story Highlights
  • Afenyo-Markin described the 2026 Budget as a “cut-and-paste” document
  • He cited multiple factual errors, including references to ministries that have been scrapped or renamed.
  • The Minority Leader called for the immediate withdrawal of the budget

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has mounted a stinging attack on the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy Document, dismissing it as a poorly assembled “cut-and-paste” report that offers no fresh policy vision.

Contributing to debates in Parliament of Ghana on Thursday, November 27, the Effutu MP accused the Ministry of Finance of failing to meet its responsibility of presenting a well-researched, precise, and forward-looking budget.

He pointed to glaring inconsistencies in the document, including references to government ministries that no longer exist or have been renamed under the current administration.

“How does a 2026 budget still talk about a Ministry of Railway Development in paragraph 519? How do you, in paragraph 528, mention a Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, and in paragraph 523, refer to a Ministry of Works and Housing?” he queried.

According to him, the budget is largely made up of recycled policies lifted from earlier fiscal statements instead of introducing bold new initiatives to drive economic growth.

Calling for accountability, the Minority Leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of the document and its replacement with a credible, error-free version.

“This is the bare minimum. This document must be withdrawn and a properly prepared budget brought back to this House for approval,” he insisted.
