Ghana’s long-delayed National Sports Policy is set to be completed and adopted before the end of the first quarter of 2026, according to Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.
Appearing before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday, November 4, Mr. Adams said the policy’s completion had been slowed by internal restructuring within the Ministry, particularly the inclusion of “recreation” as a major part of its new mandate.
“Recreation is now a high consideration within the Ministry, and we had to integrate it into the final draft of the policy,” he explained.
He also revealed that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the establishment of a dedicated School Sports Agency to oversee sports development at the basic and secondary levels nationwide — a responsibility previously handled by the Ghana Education Service.
“The President wants a permanent structure that will ensure continuous investment and coordination in school and grassroots sports,” Mr. Adams stated.
The Minister assured the Committee that the draft is in its final stages and that the full policy document will be ready before the first quarter of 2026 concludes.
Once implemented, the National Sports Policy will provide a unified framework for developing, managing, and promoting sports and recreation across Ghana.
