- Ewurabena Aubynn sworn in as MP for Ablekuma North after winning rerun with 34,090 votes
- Rerun followed annulment of 2024 results over electoral irregularities
- Minority Caucus staged walkout after Speaker denied pre-swearing statement request
Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North by Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Her induction into Parliament on Tuesday was marked by controversy, as the Majority Caucus staged a walkout. Their protest came after Speaker Bagbin declined a request from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh, to deliver a statement prior to the ceremony.
Aubynn’s swearing-in follows a hotly contested parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency. The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered the rerun across 19 polling stations after nullifying the December 2024 results due to claims of electoral irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets and mismatched vote tallies.
In the rerun, held earlier this month, Aubynn narrowly defeated the NPP’s Akua Afriyie, securing 34,090 votes against Afriyie’s 33,881.
Her victory in a historically NPP-dominated area strengthens the NDC’s position in Parliament and signals a significant political shift in the constituency.
