Former Subin Member of Parliament, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has stressed the urgent need for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to develop a comprehensive and credible membership database as the party prepares for the crucial 2028 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Ghana Se Sen on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko, the former MP commended the NPP’s recently held National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium, describing it as a success that demonstrated the party’s commitment to reform and inclusivity.
“The party has done well. It was a successful conference. But going forward, our ultimate goal must be One Member, One Vote, and for that, we need a solid database to identify who truly belongs to the NPP,” he said.
According to Hon. Boakye Antwi, the conference adopted 54 out of 56 consolidated motions, which had been reviewed from over 300 proposed amendments submitted to the party’s Amendments Committee. He noted that many of these reforms were steps in the right direction but emphasized that verifiable membership data must be prioritized ahead of 2028.
He stated that the NPP must ensure that before the next national elections, there is a clear and accurate register of all members, as this would enhance internal democracy, accountability, and participation.
“In the next two years, we must know exactly who the NPP members are. It’s not just about slogans. We need the numbers and structure to win in 2028.”
Support for Grassroots Voting Rights
Hon. Boakye Antwi also endorsed a proposal by Kwabena Agyepong, a former NPP General Secretary, that seeks to grant voting rights to former polling station executives and electoral area coordinators. He said this move would expand the party’s internal electoral college and strengthen grassroots participation.
“I was happy with that proposal. These people have served the party at the base and should have a voice in its future direction,” he added.
Call for Unity and Decency Ahead of 2028
Touching on the emerging race for the NPP’s 2028 presidential flagbearer and other key party positions, Boakye Antwi urged all aspirants and their supporters to maintain decorum in their campaigns and avoid insults and personal attacks.
“Potential candidates must be decent in their communication. If any supporter insults an opponent, the candidate must call them to order. We need unity now more than ever,” he cautioned.
When asked if he planned to contest for the General Secretary position of the NPP, Boakye Antwi remained tight-lipped.
“Let’s leave that one for now. What matters most is building a strong and unified party for 2028.”
The interview painted a picture of a party determined to reform and reposition itself for the next electoral challenge, with Boakye Antwi’s comments echoing calls from across the NPP for modernization, inclusivity, and internal discipline.
