Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has expressed concern and solidarity with former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson following her reported assault during the chaotic Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking at the first edition of the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, July 13, Minister Muntaka revealed that he personally called Madam Koomson to express sympathy and gather details of the incident.

“I reached out to Honourable Hawa Koomson to show empathy and to better understand what happened,” he said. “She shared her account with me, and I assured her that I’ve instructed the IGP to launch a thorough investigation. I encouraged her to fully cooperate when invited by the police to aid in the probe.”

Muntaka condemned the violent disruption of voting in the constituency and reiterated the government’s resolve to bring all offenders to justice, regardless of political affiliation.

“I’ve spoken firmly with the IGP about the events in Ablekuma North. We’ve sent him video evidence and given clear instructions to act decisively. There will be no cover-ups—whether the perpetrators are from within our party or not,” he declared.

He also applauded the current leadership’s open condemnation of electoral violence, describing it as a step forward in Ghana’s democratic maturity.

“This kind of violence should never be tolerated. It’s shameful that after over 30 years of democracy, we still face this. But this time, our top leaders are speaking out. The Vice President has condemned it, and though the President is out of the country, she’s taking the lead in upholding peace,” Muntaka added.
