Deputy Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, has firmly declared his unwavering opposition to LGBTQ rights, emphasizing that his stance is rooted in African tradition and personal conviction.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, the Assin North MP stated, “As a true African, I’m not in support of LGBTQ.” Drawing on his experience of living in Canada—where he actively opposed LGBTQ legislation—Quayson said his beliefs are in line with Ghanaian cultural norms and the values of many citizens.

His comments come at a time when the country is fiercely debating the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill. While the bill enjoys widespread local support, it has triggered concern among international rights groups.

Quayson’s position echoes the sentiments of many lawmakers and traditional leaders who argue that Ghana must protect its moral and cultural identity in the face of global pressure.
