Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the NPP’s 2024 running mate, has admitted that a key reason the Nana Akufo-Addo government lost public trust—and ultimately power—was the party’s failure to listen effectively to citizens.
In an interview on Tuesday, November 18, Dr. Opoku Prempeh reflected on the past year, noting that the gap between government and the people had grown painfully wide.
“One thing I’ve concluded in the last 10 months is that there was a broken trust between citizens and government. That broken trust hurt so much that we saw the results reflected at the polls,” he said.
Asked about the root cause, he was candid: “We didn’t listen enough. We assumed too many things we shouldn’t have assumed.”
He explained that even the government’s sense of purpose came under strain, compounded by a turbulent global environment. He cited economic shocks, health crises, and worldwide instability as challenges that governments across the globe struggled to manage.
“A container from China that used to cost $1,200 in logistics has risen to $14,000. People’s lifetime savings have been wiped out,” he said, highlighting the severe economic pressures citizens faced.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also noted the human toll, pointing out the unprecedented loss of lives outside of war or military crises. Despite these global shocks, he insisted the NPP’s main misstep was not engaging citizens early enough—a failure he believes set the stage for the party’s electoral defeat.
