Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has told Parliament that this week’s flooding in Accra was caused by 169 millimetres of rainfall in a single day, making it the fourth-highest daily rainfall recorded in the capital since 1995.
Addressing lawmakers, the Minister said the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) had warned that June and July would experience heavier-than-usual rainfall and had been issuing weather updates every six hours to keep authorities informed of changing conditions.
He explained that the full intensity of the rainfall became evident around midnight before the flooding, with Accra recording 169 millimetres of rain by the following morning, leading to widespread flooding across several communities.
Providing an update on the impact of the disaster, the Minister disclosed that 12 people lost their lives, seven others remain missing, and 38,802 people have been displaced across the Greater Accra Region. He added that the floods had affected 7,761 households as of Wednesday morning.
The government continues to assess the situation and coordinate emergency response efforts as affected communities receive support and recovery operations continue.
