Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has disclosed that FIFA will release an initial $2.5 million to Ghana to support the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup should the nation qualify for the global tournament.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, June 1, Adams explained that FIFA provides financial assistance to countries that qualify for the World Cup, with a portion of the funds made available before the competition begins to facilitate preparations.

According to the Minister, the advance payment is intended to cover essential activities such as training camps, international friendly matches, player transportation, and other logistical requirements ahead of the tournament.

He stressed that all monies received would be subject to strict accountability measures by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), emphasizing the importance of transparency and proper financial management.

“Of course it will be accounted for and that is one thing I haven’t hidden away from the FA, that every pesewa they are utilising they must make sure proper records are kept,” Adams stated.

The Minister further explained that FIFA offers additional financial rewards as teams progress through the competition, with earnings increasing at every stage from the knockout rounds to the final.

He expressed optimism that Ghana would perform strongly at the tournament, noting that advancing deeper into the competition would bring greater financial benefits to the country.

On preparations for the Mundial, Adams revealed that the Black Stars are expected to travel with a 26-man squad, although the final list will be determined by the technical team.

He also confirmed that government has decided to maintain the current structure of player benefits, including appearance fees and daily allowances, with no changes planned ahead of the tournament.

“We are keeping to the very conditions that they have operated in since I think 2014. The appearance fee remains the same. The per diem remains the same,” he said.

Adams added that any future review of player remuneration would require extensive consultation among key stakeholders to ensure consensus and fairness.
