The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has defended government’s decision to reduce selected fuel-related taxes, insisting that the timing of the intervention is both appropriate and necessary.
Speaking in an interview after an emergency Cabinet meeting, he explained that the measures were carefully assessed and introduced at a critical period when citizens were facing increased pressure from rising fuel prices.
“You need to take time and analyse the situation to decide the best measures,” he said.
According to him, government intervened only after recognising the growing financial strain on Ghanaians, adding that the suspension of certain fuel taxes and margins was aimed at easing economic hardship.
“When it gets to the point where it is putting a lot of pressure, particularly on Ghanaians, then we take measures to mitigate. The measures we are putting in place are because Ghanaians are becoming burdened,” he noted.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further clarified that the intervention is temporary and will be reviewed once economic conditions improve.
“Once it eases up and things become normal, the measures will not still be in place because Ghanaians will be in better conditions,” he added.
Defending the timing of the policy, he maintained that government acted at the most appropriate moment.
“So the timing is perfect. We did it when we needed to,” he emphasised.
