Ghana has become the first African nation to formalize a Security and Defence Partnership with the European Union, aimed at boosting efforts to combat terrorism and rising insecurity in West Africa.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang underscored the urgency of coordinated security responses, citing the recent killing of Ghanaian tomato traders in Burkina Faso as a troubling example of growing regional threats.

She noted that deeper collaboration with the EU is essential to safeguarding peace and stability across the Sahel and the wider West African region.

Under the agreement, the EU will supply Ghana with military equipment, including drones, vehicles, and motorcycles, to enhance security operations. The Vice President assured that these resources would be strategically deployed to improve the country’s response to emerging threats.

Kaja Kallas, Vice President of the European Commission, revealed that the support forms part of a €50 million package provided to Ghana since 2023 to strengthen counter-terrorism capacity. She added that the partnership will deepen cooperation in areas such as conflict prevention, cybersecurity, and regional security coordination.
