The Acting Ashanti Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Baah Acheamfuor, has described former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko as an effective, selfless, and resourceful leader

Mr. Acheamfuor quickly said he is praying Paul Afoko does not win the upcoming NPP National Chairmanship election.

Speaking on Lawson TV/Radio’s “Ghana Se Sen” Morning Show with Kwame Tanko on Friday, November 7, 2025, Mr. Acheamfuor said although he considers Afoko a friend and an outstanding leader, his victory would make the opposition NPP far more formidable.

“Paul is an effective leader, half of him is Mahama — that selfless attitude, sacrifice, and leadership. I pray he doesn’t win,” Acheamfuor stated.

He revealed that he was part of the meeting that led to Paul Afoko’s suspension in 2015 and personally informed him about the decision, noting that Afoko’s troubles stemmed from not being former President Akufo-Addo’s preferred choice for the chairmanship role.

“I was part of the meeting that decided on his suspension in 2015. Paul was never Akufo-Addo’s choice, but he is a good man, resourceful and effective. If he wins, the NDC will have a real fight on its hands,” he added.

Mr. Acheamfuor also commented on Afoko’s competitors, including John Boadu, noting that while Boadu is experienced, he does not possess Afoko’s unique effectiveness and leadership style.

Former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko recently announced his intention to recontest for the party’s top position, marking a potential political comeback after his controversial suspension nearly a decade ago.

He was suspended in 2015 following a recommendation from the party’s Disciplinary Committee, after the Council of Elders petitioned for action against him over alleged acts that undermined then-flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign.

Afoko insists his decision to run again follows “deep reflection and encouragement from well-meaning party members and stakeholders.”
