A 33-year-old woman narrowly avoided mob justice at the Assin Fosu New Market in the Central Region after allegedly attempting to spend counterfeit money, with police stepping in just in time to rescue her.

The suspect, who identified herself as Mary Kortey, also known as Akweley, is now in police custody assisting with investigations.

She claims to be from Kwashieman in Accra. Traders allege she tried to buy food and other items using fake GH¢100 and GH¢200 notes.

Eyewitnesses reported that multiple traders realized they had received counterfeit money from the same woman, sparking a confrontation that turned violent. The suspect was reportedly beaten by the crowd before police intervened.

A search of the woman revealed GH¢1,900 in fake notes. Some traders said counterfeit currency has frequently circulated during busy market days, casting doubt on her claims of innocence.

Sources also revealed that after her arrest, the suspect allegedly pretended to be mentally unstable—undressing and acting erratically at the police station—in an apparent attempt to evade prosecution.

The Assin Fosu District Crime Officer, ASP Rosemond Duncan, told Citi News that the suspect claimed the counterfeit notes were given to her by her boyfriend, identified only as Evans, a Nigerian national who is currently at large.

Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident.
