The Nigerian military has announced the killing of 19 armed bandits during a security operation in Kano State — a rare outbreak of violence in the country’s northwestern commercial centre.

According to army spokesman Babatunde Zubairu, two soldiers and one local vigilante member also lost their lives in the encounter.

Troops, acting on intelligence and supported by other security agencies, raided a suspected bandit hideout in Shanono, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The operation forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts to curb banditry, kidnappings, and deadly attacks across northern Nigeria.

In a separate operation, Nigerian and Nigerien forces successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants on the Forward Operating Base in Kangar, Borno State. At least six insurgents were neutralised in the initial clash, while airstrikes targeted those attempting to flee.

Several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force sustained minor injuries and have been evacuated for medical care.
