The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) is demanding the immediate arrest and investigation of the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, and his alleged accomplices following a violent assault on officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at Bronikrom, near Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, November 3, 2025, the BPS condemned the attack, describing it as a brazen obstruction of law enforcement officers in the line of duty. The incident reportedly involved the assault of the NAIMOS Director of Operations and his team, destruction of property, and threats to the lives of both military personnel and public officials.
According to reports, the MP allegedly led a group of men who ambushed the task force during an anti-galamsey operation in the area. The BPS has since outlined several urgent actions it expects authorities to take, including:
-
The immediate arrest and interrogation of Hon. Ebenezer Kwaku Addo and all persons involved in the attack.
-
A comprehensive investigation by the Ghana Police Service, with support from the Ghana Armed Forces, into the MP’s role and how the case was handled at the Hwidiem Police Station.
-
Protection for NAIMOS officers, soldiers, and witnesses to ensure their safety during investigations.
-
A Parliamentary inquiry to establish disciplinary or criminal consequences if the MP is found culpable.
-
Enhanced security protocols for all anti-illegal mining task forces nationwide.
“The Bureau reiterates that no one — regardless of political position or influence — is above the law,” the statement emphasized, warning that such attacks undermine national security and embolden illegal mining networks destroying Ghana’s environment.
The incident reportedly forced police in Hwidiem to intervene and rescue the NAIMOS team after they came under mob attack during an operation that had led to the arrest of two suspected illegal miners and the seizure of vehicles and weapons near the Hwidiem–Goaso Highway.
A Burkinabe national was among those detained, and the affected mining site — which showed signs of severe land degradation and water pollution — has since been sealed off. Calm has returned to the area while investigations continue.
The BPS said it would monitor developments closely and may petition the Speaker of Parliament and the IGP to ensure full accountability.
