Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has been transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) following his brief detention at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

His relocation has stirred political tensions, drawing intense interest from the public and high-ranking party officials. Notably, the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reportedly led efforts to fulfill Wontumi’s bail requirements.

A large crowd of supporters, along with several Members of Parliament and top party executives, thronged the NIB premises in solidarity. Heavy security has since been deployed to manage the situation.

Chairman Wontumi was first apprehended by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, before being handed over to EOCO.

Though EOCO granted him a GHS50 million bail on Wednesday, May 28, he has yet to satisfy the terms, which include providing two justified sureties.

In a show of protest, Minority MPs staged a walkout from Parliament and marched to EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, May 29, demanding Wontumi’s release.

The demonstration led to traffic chaos and a swift police response.

However, the protest was short-lived, as the MPs returned to Parliament the next day, ending their brief boycott.
