AG Orders EOCO to Probe Yamin, Abanga Over Galamsey Allegations
Attorney-General directs full investigation into NDC officials linked to illegal mining operations

- EOCO to investigate NDC’s Yamin and Abanga over galamsey links
- AG cites rising public concern and security reports
- Probe to include others named in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has instructed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to conduct a thorough investigation into suspected illegal mining (galamsey) activities involving two top opposition NDC officials — Joseph Yamin, the party’s National Organiser, and Yakubu Abanga, its National Vice Chairman.
In a letter dated July 15, 2025, Dr. Ayine directed EOCO to summon the two for questioning in connection with reports linking them to unauthorised mining operations. The move comes amid heightened public concern, media scrutiny, and national security briefings on the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
“These activities violate our mining laws and seriously threaten water bodies, forests, and the livelihoods of rural communities,” the letter noted.
The Attorney-General further instructed EOCO to expand the investigation to include all other individuals implicated in illegal mining operations, with particular focus on issues outlined in the Frimpong-Boateng report.
He also called for close cooperation with the Minerals Commission, tasking its CEO to support EOCO with regulatory insight and technical guidance during the investigation.
This directive is in line with President John Mahama’s Reset Agenda, which prioritises environmental protection and reforms in the natural resources sector. Dr. Ayine reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on galamsey and illegal exploitation of Ghana’s mineral wealth.
EOCO has been urged to handle the matter with urgency, in accordance with its mandate under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804).
