Police Corporal Charged With Murder Over Central University Student’s Death
Officer accused of pursuing motorbike rider before allegedly kicking the bike on the Tema Motorway

A police corporal has been arraigned at the Adabraka District Court in Accra and charged with murder over the death of 23-year-old Central University law student, Ivan Apprey Baidoo.
General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng of the Ghana Police Service, who was stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit at the Police Headquarters, is accused of unlawfully causing Baidoo’s death, contrary to Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the prosecution, Baidoo boarded a Yango motorbike from Ashongman Estates to East Legon Astroturf Park on August 27, 2026, where he was going to play football.
At the UPSA traffic intersection, the rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, allegedly jumped a red light. Koranteng, 34, who was on duty at the intersection, reportedly pursued the motorbike and signalled the rider to stop.
The rider allegedly failed to stop and continued through the Okponglo traffic light and Tetteh Quarshie Interchange onto the Tema Motorway.
The prosecution said that after the motorbike passed the Old Tollbooth on the Tema Motorway, Koranteng allegedly kicked it with his leg, causing the rider to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier.
The police officer allegedly left the scene without stopping or arranging immediate medical assistance for the victims.
Good Samaritans later transported Baidoo and Arthur to the Tema General Hospital, where Baidoo was pronounced dead on arrival. Arthur was treated and discharged.
A postmortem conducted on September 3 by pathologist Dr. Eric Dumfeh found that Baidoo died from haemorrhagic shock resulting from bilateral haemothorax and haemoperitoneum caused by blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.
The Ghana Police Service had earlier identified and interdicted Koranteng after preliminary investigations linked him to the incident. The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department took over the case on September 8, while Koranteng was arrested on September 12 ahead of his arraignment.
The Police Professional Standards Bureau is also reviewing the officer’s conduct as investigations continue.
Baidoo’s family had called for a transparent investigation and prosecution if the officer is found culpable. His father, Evans Baidoo, said the family did not believe his son’s death was an ordinary accident.
Baidoo is scheduled to be buried on Saturday, September 19, 2026, following a pre-burial service at 6:00 a.m. and the main burial service at 7:00 a.m. at CEM Rehoboth Temple near Wisconsin University.
