Five officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were injured in a road accident early Sunday while responding to a reported surface fuel tank fire at Buipe in the Savannah Region.

The Savannah Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, DOII Salisu Mohammed Sirilbaini, said the Buipe Fire Command received a distress call in the morning and immediately deployed a fire tender to the scene.

However, before the crew could reach the location, the fire engine reportedly lost control, veered off the road, and overturned onto its side.

The injured firefighters were quickly rushed to the Buipe Government Hospital for medical attention. According to DOII Sirilbaini, two of the personnel have been treated and discharged, while three others remain in critical condition.

He added that the Chief Fire Officer has assured the injured officers of full support and access to the best possible medical care.

In response to the incident, the Savannah Regional Commander, DO2 Abubakar Alhassan, deployed additional firefighters from Damango to reinforce the Buipe team. Plans were initially considered to transfer the injured personnel to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, but doctors at the Buipe Government Hospital confirmed they have the capacity to adequately manage their treatment.

DOII Sirilbaini stressed that no lives were lost in the accident, although all five firefighters sustained injuries in the line of duty.
