Massive Fire Guts Zabzugu Market, Traders Suffer Heavy Losses
Wind-fueled blaze destroys yams and goods as residents battle flames without nearby fire station

- Early morning fire razes Zabzugu Market on February 23.
- Traders lose large quantities of yams and merchandise.
- Lack of local fire station hampers rapid emergency response.
A devastating fire has swept through the Zabzugu Market in the Northern Region, destroying large stocks of yams and other goods and leaving traders reeling from heavy losses.
The blaze erupted in the early hours of Monday, February 23, rapidly consuming stalls and merchandise before emergency services could arrive.
Residents mobilized in an attempt to contain the inferno, but their efforts were hindered by the lack of a local fire station in the Zabzugu District. In the absence of immediate assistance from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), community members resorted to using buckets and other improvised tools to battle the flames, while traders scrambled to salvage whatever they could.
Eyewitnesses said strong winds fueled the fire, causing it to spread swiftly across the market and intensifying the destruction.
The incident has left many traders devastated and demanding urgent action to strengthen fire prevention systems and emergency response capacity in the district.
