Wontumi, officially known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, was released on Monday, June 2, after meeting strict bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He had been in custody since May 27, facing investigations related to fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Authorities have also hinted at a possible link to an international organised crime network, according to Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai.

He was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified. Initially, his legal team struggled to meet these terms, resulting in a delay in his release.

However, on May 30, his lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that the bail documentation had been completed, largely with the help of NPP stalwart and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who acted as a surety.

Despite fulfilling the bail requirements, Wontumi’s release was delayed further due to a legal application filed to review the bail conditions.

The application was later withdrawn, allowing EOCO to process his release.

His detention sparked significant attention, with NPP Members of Parliament, party executives, and supporters rallying behind him and criticizing the bail terms as excessive and politically motivated.

Though released, Chairman Wontumi remains a subject of ongoing investigations. The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is reportedly preparing its own docket separate from those of EOCO and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with the authorities as investigations into the alleged offenses continue.
