Supreme Court Overturns Tamale High Court Ruling on Kpandai Election

Apex court’s 4–1 majority ruling restores NPP MP’s mandate in Northern Region seat

Story Highlights
  • Supreme Court quashes Tamale High Court decision that annulled the Kpandai election results
  • NPP MP Matthew Nyindam retains his parliamentary seat following the ruling
  • Planned by-election by the Electoral Commission has been cancelled

The Supreme Court has overturned a High Court ruling in Tamale that had annulled the results of the 2024 parliamentary election in the Kpandai Constituency of the Northern Region.

In a majority decision of four to one, with Justice Gabriel Pwamang dissenting, the apex court set aside the High Court’s judgment delivered on 24 November 2025, along with all related orders and actions stemming from the ruling.

The decision means that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Matthew Nyindam, will retain his parliamentary seat. As a result, there will be no by-election in the constituency, contrary to earlier plans announced by the Electoral Commission.

The EC had moved to organise a by-election after the Speaker of Parliament declared the seat vacant in line with the Tamale High Court’s decision, which has now been nullified by the Supreme Court.
