Sunderland have completed the signing of experienced Belgium defender Thomas Meunier on a two-year contract following his departure from French club Lille.
The 34-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience, having made more than 550 senior appearances during spells with Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor, and Lille. During his time at PSG, Meunier won three league titles.
On the international stage, Meunier has earned 83 caps for Belgium and featured in three matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He becomes Sunderland’s first signing of the transfer window after the exits of forward Eliezer Mayenda and midfielder Dan Neil.
Director of Football Florent Ghisolfi welcomed the signing, describing Meunier as a player whose experience, leadership, and professionalism will strengthen the squad. He added that the defender’s winning mentality and quality at both ends of the pitch make him a valuable addition.
Meunier is expected to join his new teammates in early August as Sunderland prepare for the upcoming domestic campaign and their first European campaign in 53 years.
