President John Dramani Mahama has announced that work on the first phase of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam Project, a major infrastructure initiative estimated to cost nearly $1 billion, will begin soon.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, February 10, President Mahama disclosed that the project will be executed in two phases.
According to him, the first phase will focus on hydropower generation, while the second phase will concentrate on irrigation development to support agriculture in the region.
“The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam is a major project, so we are adopting a phased approach. The first phase involves preparing the site for the dam to produce electricity. The hydropower component is expected to generate between 60 and 70 megawatts,” he stated.
President Mahama further revealed that the project includes a solar power component expected to produce an additional 30 to 40 megawatts, bringing total projected generation to over 100 megawatts to ensure economic viability.
He added that the second phase will involve the construction of canals, installation of pumps, and land preparation for irrigation, enabling the dam to support both energy production and agricultural development.
