Ghanaians Rejected NPP Over Poor Leadership and Provocations – Suhuyini
Tamale North MP urges the NDC to move beyond celebration and focus on meeting the high expectations of Ghanaians
- John Mahama secured over 6 million votes, while the NPP's Dr. Bawumia fell behind with just over 4 million
- Suhuyini attributes the NPP's defeat to their poor governance and provocative leadership style
- The MP stressed that the NDC must reflect on their victory and deliver on the high expectations of the electorate
Alhassan Suhuyini, Member of Parliament for Tamale North, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent electoral defeat to their poor governance, which he says provoked widespread dissatisfaction among Ghanaians.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, now President-elect John Dramani Mahama, secured a decisive victory in the December 7 elections.
Mahama garnered over six million votes, significantly outpacing the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who managed just over four million votes. The NDC also gained a commanding parliamentary majority, winning over 180 seats.
In an interview on Saturday, Suhuyini reflected on the NPP’s shortcomings, suggesting that their leadership style alienated many voters.
He highlighted the need for the NDC to take their victory as a call to responsibility rather than mere celebration.
“It is a victory that requires reflection. The funfair should be over by now. We need to understand the level of responsibility that has been placed on His Excellency the President’s shoulders and, by extension, the shoulders of the NDC. The margin of victory should not let us lose sight of the fact that expectations are also that high,” he remarked.
Suhuyini emphasized that while the NPP’s “abysmal” performance contributed to their defeat, the NDC must remain focused on delivering on the hopes of the electorate.
“Their style of leadership in many instances provoked people, and I am sure it is that provocation that has manifested in the endorsement that the NDC got,” he added.
