Over 900 Killed in 9,000 Road Crashes Between January and August – MTTD
The MTTD says about 9,000 preventable crashes involving 15,000 vehicles left nearly 11,000 people injured between January and August 2026.

More than 900 people have died in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2026, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).
The MTTD also recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving approximately 15,000 vehicles during the eight-month period, with nearly 11,000 people sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Director of Research, Education and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Obeng, said the figures should prompt road users to exercise greater caution and responsibility.
Speaking in an interview, ACP Obeng said the recorded crashes involved vehicles of different categories and models.
He stressed the need for sustained road safety education alongside measures aimed at reducing the impact of crashes when they occur.
According to him, protecting motorists, passengers and pedestrians requires a collective commitment to safer road-use practices and continued efforts by relevant authorities to address road safety challenges.
ACP Obeng said reducing road fatalities and injuries would require both preventive and responsive measures to improve road safety across the country.
