Escaped Convict Recaptured As Ashanti Prisons Honours 20 Officers

The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana Prisons Service has recaptured a convict who escaped from lawful custody while on external labour duty at Sokoban in Kumasi.
The convict, Adams Ibrahim, escaped on September 21, 2026, but was later arrested at his hometown, Atwima Twedie, and has since been returned to the custody of the Prisons Service.
A Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer has been assigned to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape. Ibrahim is also expected to appear before court to face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Ibrahim was originally convicted of stealing and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in default of paying a GH¢3,600 fine. At the time of his escape, he had served three months of the sentence.
The Prisons Service said stealing is classified as a minor offence or misdemeanour under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and that inmates serving sentences for such offences are generally considered to pose a lower risk to public safety.
Based on his original sentence, the Service said Ibrahim would have served less than four months before completing his sentence.
The recapture followed what the Ashanti Regional Command described as a coordinated response involving the vigilance and teamwork of its officers. 
At a brief ceremony at the Kumasi Central Prison on Friday, September 25, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana Prisons Service, Deputy Director of Prisons James B. Mwinyelle, commended the officers who participated in the operation.
A total of 20 officers were honoured for their roles in the recapture. They comprised one Corporal, 17 Lance Corporals and two Second Class Officers.
The officers received letters of commendation and undisclosed monetary awards in recognition of their efforts.
Deputy Director of Prisons Mwinyelle urged the officers to view the recognition as motivation to continue upholding the Service’s core values of security, safety and discipline.
He also emphasised the importance of collaboration, swift response and adherence to standard operating procedures when dealing with security breaches.
Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding Ibrahim’s escape and determine whether any further action is required.
