- NAPO says his ‘mo Kwame Nkrumah’ comment was misinterpreted and taken out of context

- NAPO likens the remark to football banter, emphasizing it was not an attack on Ghana’s first President
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO and 2024 running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has clarified that his controversial “mo Kwame Nkrumah” comment was taken out of context and misinterpreted by the public.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the former Manhyia South MP insisted that the backlash did not reflect his intentions.
He explained that the statement was made during a specific political moment and was not meant as a critique of Ghana’s first President.
“At that time, you can’t go into the evidence, so I made a statement ‘mo Kwame Nkrumah,’ and I subsequently visited Nkroful to speak with the Chiefs and explain the context in which the remark was made,” he said.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the challenges of political communication, noting that public figures must take responsibility when their words are misunderstood.
“If somebody misunderstands, misquotes, or misinterprets your communication, you have to own it. So I owned it, and that is why I issued the statement,” he added.
He likened his comment to football banter, saying it was intended to tease, not attack. “I’m a die-hard Kumasi Asante Kotoko fan. So if I’m teasing Olympic supporters and say ‘mo Oly fuo no,’ I’m not insulting them; I’m just supporting my team,” he explained.
