NPP Approves 14 Constitutional Amendments at National Conference in Kumasi

Changes cover party leadership, executive structures, administration, campaign organisation and women’s participation

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has approved 14 amendments to its constitution at its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, with the changes covering party leadership, administration, disciplinary structures, digital operations and electoral organisation.

The amendments, proposed by the party’s Constitutional Amendments Committee, were presented to delegates and subsequently approved through a series of voice votes.

Among the key changes is an increase in the representation of the National Council of Elders on the National Disciplinary Committee from one member to two. The amendment is intended to strengthen the committee’s experience and institutional representation.

The party has also approved the creation of an additional Constituency Vice Chairperson, expanding participation in constituency-level leadership and allowing for a broader distribution of responsibilities.

14 NPP Constitutional Amendments Approved

  1. Increase in Council of Elders Representation
    The representation of the National Council of Elders on the National Disciplinary Committee increases from one to two members.

  2. Additional Constituency Vice Chairperson
    An additional Constituency Vice Chairperson will be added to the Constituency Executive Committee.

  3. IT Officers on Executive Committees
    Regional and Constituency Information Technology Officers will become members of their respective executive committees.

  4. Deputy Communications Officers
    Deputy Regional and Deputy Constituency Communications Officers will serve as members of their respective executive committees.

  5. Additional Regional Vice Chairpersons
    Two additional Regional Vice Chairpersons will be added to Regional Executive Committees.

  6. Voting Rights for Regional Council of Elders Chairpersons
    Chairpersons of Regional Councils of Elders will be granted voting rights at the National Delegates Conference.

  7. Voting Rights for Regional Patrons
    Chairpersons of Regional Patrons will also be granted voting rights at the National Delegates Conference.

  8. Administrative Manual for Party Officers
    The National Council will be required to provide an administrative manual outlining the duties and responsibilities of party officers at all levels.

  9. Presidential Candidate to Lead Campaign Structure
    The presidential candidate, in consultation with the National Executive Committee, will develop the presidential campaign structure, subject to National Council approval.

  10. Clarification of Party Leadership
    The elected presidential candidate will be the party leader. When the NPP is in government, the President will lead the party until a new presidential candidate is elected.

  11. Three Additional National Vice Chairpersons
    Three additional National Vice Chairpersons will be created, bringing the total to six—three elected and three appointed.

  12. Separate Elections for National Vice Chairpersons
    The First, Second and Third National Vice Chairperson positions will be contested separately at the National Delegates Conference.

  13. President on National Steering Committee
    The President, when the NPP is in government, will be reinstated as a member of the National Steering Committee.

  14. Women’s Wing and Gender Participation
    The Women’s Wing will be mandated to promote and support increased participation of women in politics in accordance with the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).
