NPP Adopts New Leadership Structure for Elected Flagbearer
Constitutional amendment makes the elected presidential candidate party leader

- Flagbearer becomes party leader
- President leads when NPP is in government
- mendment approved by delegates
Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved a constitutional amendment that makes the party’s elected presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The amendment was approved through an oral vote at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

Known as Motion Number 10, the proposal seeks to amend Articles 10, 4, 1 and 13 of the party’s constitution to establish the leadership role of the elected presidential candidate.
Under the approved amendment, once the NPP elects a presidential candidate, that candidate will assume leadership of the party.
Delegates also approved a related provision outlining who leads the party when the NPP is in government.
The provision states that the President shall be the leader of the party when the NPP is in government, and will remain in that position until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The amendment therefore establishes a leadership structure tied to the party’s electoral status—placing leadership with the President when the party is in government and with its elected presidential candidate when it is not.
The decision forms part of the NPP’s ongoing constitutional reforms aimed at defining the party’s leadership arrangements.
