The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to fulfill key campaign promises and misusing state power.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, during the unveiling of the NPP’s amended constitution, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong criticized the government for its handling of illegal mining, governance, and national security.
Kodua noted that Ghanaians granted the NDC an “overwhelming mandate” in the 2024 elections with the expectation that the party would clamp down on illegal mining (galamsey), uphold ethical governance, and strengthen state institutions. However, nearly a year into its term, he argued that these expectations remain unfulfilled.
“The galamsey menace has worsened under the current administration, posing an existential threat to Ghana’s environment,” Kodua stated. He also accused the government of using state institutions to intimidate political opponents and suppress critical media coverage.
He highlighted incidents such as the filing of nolle prosequi to free party members on trial for alleged embezzlement and claimed there were attempts to “capture institutions, including the judiciary, and undermine parliamentary seats won by the opposition.”
Kodua further condemned the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, alleging that the executive has compromised the judiciary. “The judiciary, which should be the last vanguard of the rule of law, has been captured. Judges now fear delivering justice according to the law because they worry about suffering the same fate as Justice Torkonoo,” he said.
