The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly dismissed any speculation about a third-term bid for President John Dramani Mahama, reiterating its commitment to Ghana’s constitutional order and democratic principles.

In an interview on Tuesday, December 16, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey stressed that the party would not support any attempts to amend the Constitution to extend presidential tenure, regardless of its parliamentary majority.

Kwetey hailed Ghana as a model of democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, noting that the country’s adherence to constitutional limits continues to inspire other democracies in the region.

“First and foremost, across sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has provided a model for democratic transition that remains an inspiration,” he stated.

He emphasised that the NDC would not encourage actions that undermine the Constitution, noting that President Mahama himself has shut down discussions about a possible third term.

“We should never encourage a disruption of our constitutional stipulations. The President addressed this early on and rightly refused to entertain such conversations,” Kwetey said.

The General Secretary also underscored that the party would not use its current parliamentary majority to push through constitutional amendments for personal or political gain.

“Even with our strong parliamentary majority, we must act in the country’s best interest and not attempt to change the Constitution for the benefit of any individual,” he explained.

Kwetey concluded by reaffirming the NDC’s firm stance:

“We stand behind the President and say clearly—there will be no third term.”
