Story Highlights
  • Mobile money transactions hit GH¢447.4 billion in February 2026, up from GH¢316.2 billion a year earlier.
  • Active agents and accounts increased, signaling deeper adoption across the country.
  • Interoperability transactions grew significantly, improving seamless digital payments.

The total value of mobile money transactions in Ghana rose sharply to GH¢447.4 billion in February 2026, underscoring the growing dominance of digital payments and their role in advancing financial inclusion nationwide.

According to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana on March 17, 2026, this figure marks a significant increase from the GH¢316.2 billion recorded in February 2025, highlighting strong year-on-year growth in mobile money usage.

The report also revealed that mobile money platforms processed 899 million transactions in February. Although this was lower than the 949 million recorded in January and the 982 million peak in December 2025, it represents a notable rise from the 698 million transactions recorded during the same period last year.

Expanding agent network

Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem continues to grow, with the number of registered agents increasing to 976,000 in February 2026, up from 896,000 a year earlier. Active agents—those regularly facilitating transactions—also rose significantly to 515,000, compared to 411,000 in February 2025, pointing to stronger engagement across communities.

The total balance held in mobile money float accounts stood at GH¢33.9 billion in February. While this reflects a slight dip from GH¢35.6 billion in January, it is considerably higher than the GH¢27.9 billion recorded a year ago.

Growth in interoperability

Interoperability between mobile money platforms continues to gain momentum. The value of transactions across networks reached GH¢4.9 billion in February, up from GH¢2.9 billion in February 2025. Similarly, the number of interoperability transactions increased to 27.2 million from 19.7 million over the same period, indicating improved efficiency in the digital payments system.

Rising account usage

Mobile money account penetration also saw steady growth. Registered accounts increased to 81.8 million in February from 81.2 million in January. Meanwhile, active accounts—defined as those used at least once within the past 90 days—stood at 26.5 million, reflecting a strong base of consistent users.

Wider economic outlook

The mobile money figures form part of the Bank of Ghana’s broader economic update, which also highlighted trends in inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, and capital markets. Notably, the GSE Composite Index recorded a year-to-date growth of 46.7 percent as of February 2026, with total market capitalisation reaching GH¢235.7 billion.

Overall, the February data reinforces the critical role of mobile money in Ghana’s financial ecosystem, even as transaction volumes fluctuate due to seasonal factors.
