Minister for the Greater Accra Region, Linda Ocloo, has issued a public apology following backlash over remarks suggesting that postings to Northern Ghana could be perceived as a form of punishment.

The comment, captured in a widely circulated video, triggered criticism from sections of the public, particularly residents of the Northern Regions who viewed it as dismissive and insensitive.

In a statement addressing the issue, Madam Ocloo described the remark as a genuine slip of the tongue, emphasizing that it does not reflect her true beliefs or the official policies governing postings within Ghana’s Public Service.

She explained that her response came during a media interaction concerning allegations that some technocrats accused of improperly issuing development permits are often reassigned to nearby districts—allowing questionable practices to continue unchecked.

According to her, the intention was to highlight situations where certain officials are posted to locations far from their usual places of residence. However, she admitted that her wording created an unintended impression that such postings were meant as punishment.

“I sincerely acknowledge the concerns that this has generated and offer my unreserved apology to all Ghanaians, especially my brothers and sisters in the Northern Regions, for any misunderstanding, offence, or discomfort caused,” she stated.

Madam Ocloo further underscored her respect for due process, equity, and professionalism in public administration, reiterating her commitment to fairness in all decisions.

She assured the public that staff postings and transfers would continue to be handled strictly in accordance with established rules and regulations, without bias or prejudice.

“I deeply value the trust reposed in me and remain dedicated to serving the people of the Greater Accra Region with integrity, fairness, and accountability,” she added.

The Minister concluded by urging the public to consider the matter clarified.
