The 2026 edition of the Lawson Media Kwahu Easter Gala has taken a bold and historic step with the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), marking a significant transformation in the organisation of community football in Ghana.

For the first time in the history of the gala, referees are now able to review contentious decisions during matches, ensuring improved accuracy and fairness in officiating. The innovation has added a professional touch to the tournament, aligning it with modern trends in global football.

The VAR system was set up by a technical team led by Fred Amoyaw and Kingsley Oppong, whose efforts have been widely commended for successfully integrating the technology into a local football competition.

The introduction of VAR is already influencing matches at the Obomeng Astro Turf, giving officials greater confidence in decision-making, especially in crucial moments such as penalty calls and goal-line situations. Fans have also expressed excitement about the development, describing it as a major upgrade to the gala.

This year’s Lawson Media Kwahu Easter Gala continues to grow in stature, attracting strong participation from communities across the area. With a grand prize of GHC 40,000 at stake, competition remains intense as teams battle for supremacy.

The move to introduce VAR reflects the organisers’ commitment to improving standards and enhancing the credibility of the tournament. It also sets a new benchmark for other community-based competitions across the country.

Day 2 kicked off with a fiercely contested Group A encounter, where Asakraka stunned host side Obomeng with a narrow but decisive 1-0 victory.

Despite the home crowd’s overwhelming support, Obomeng struggled to break down a disciplined Asakraka side that capitalised on a crucial moment to secure all three points.

The second group stage fixture turned into a goal festival as Obo delivered a ruthless performance, dismantling Nsuta with an emphatic 7-0 victory.

Obo’s attacking display left fans in awe, with clinical finishing and relentless pressure exposing Nsuta’s defensive frailties.

The result now positions Obo, the defending champions, as favourites in Group B, which also features Mpraeso.
