Former Majority Leader says internal disputes cost NPP in 2024 elections

- He said competitive primaries should be limited to “orphan constituencies”
- The former Suame MP attributed the NPP’s 2024 election losses to internal party conflicts
Former Majority Leader in Parliament and National Campaign Coordinator for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB), Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has proposed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) build internal consensus to allow sitting NPP Members of Parliament to go unopposed in future parliamentary primaries.
According to him, the approach should apply strictly to constituencies where the incumbent MP enjoys broad support and is not entangled in chieftaincy disputes, internal conflicts, or issues that have caused disaffection at the grassroots.
He stressed that competitive primaries should instead be reserved for what he described as “orphan constituencies”—seats without an incumbent NPP MP.
Speaking in an interview on Ghana Se Sen with Kwame Tanko, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu attributed the NPP’s poor showing in the 2024 general elections partly to internal wrangling and divisive parliamentary primaries in several constituencies.
He argued that unnecessary internal contests weaken party structures, drain resources, and create cracks that opposition parties often exploit during general elections.
By promoting consensus and protecting sitting MPs who have performed well and maintained unity, he believes the NPP can rebuild trust, strengthen its internal cohesion, and position itself more competitively ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The former Suame MP emphasized that unity, not internal rivalry, will be critical to the party’s recovery and future electoral success.
