Kumasi: ECG Engineers Battle Python Invasion to Restore Power at Ahodwo
Kumasi Zoo officers joined ECG engineers after two pythons and their eggs were discovered at a transformer substation during efforts to restore electricity to affected residents in Ahodwo.

Residents along the Ahodwo-Daban-Dr. Asafo Adjei Road in Kumasi were left in darkness on Wednesday, April 24, 2026, after a fault on a distribution feeder caused a power outage in the area.
Engineers from the Ahinsan District of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) were immediately deployed to identify the problem and restore electricity to affected homes and businesses.
Although power was restored to some households, residents around the Cocoa Depot and Star Sawmill companies remained without electricity, prompting the team to intensify efforts to fix the fault.
In a dramatic twist, the engineers moved to a nearby transformer to replace a faulty fuse, only to discover that a large python had taken over the substation.
Ahinsan District Engineer, Kwaku Appiah, confirmed the incident, explaining that attempts by some residents to capture the snake were unsuccessful.
The python reportedly slithered beneath the substation to hide, forcing the ECG staff to risk their safety as they hurriedly replaced the fuse to restore power supply.
Officials from the Kumasi Zoo were later called in to assist with the rescue operation. However, while trying to capture the first python, they discovered a second one at the same location.
The reptiles are believed to have been living in the substation for several weeks, as officers also retrieved eggs from the site later that night.
Meanwhile, ECG’s General Manager for the Ashanti West Region, George Amoah, has urged customers to promptly report power outages through official ECG communication channels or via the company’s stakeholder WhatsApp platforms for quick response.
