- Asante-Boateng highlighted that Kennedy’s leadership could attract former party members back
Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akim South, has urged all New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates and polling officers to rally behind Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, a candidate for the NPP’s flagbearership primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
His appeal followed a brief meeting with some delegates in his constituency.
In an exclusive interview with Lawson News reporter Anthony Amissah, Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng revealed that a proposal from a Constitutional Review Committee in Parliament seeks to amend presidential and parliamentary terms from four years to five years while maintaining the two-term limit.
He emphasized that the likelihood of any candidate winning the 2028 election and securing another term is high, as both the NPP and NDC may present new faces as flagbearers.
He therefore suggested that the NPP needs a strong candidate for the election.
He cautioned that if delegates make an incorrect choice for the NPP flagbearer in the 2026 primaries, the party risks remaining in opposition for up to nine years.
Hon. Kwaku Asante-Boateng firmly endorsed Hon. Kennedy Agyapong as the best candidate to help the NPP regain power and avoid a long period in opposition.
He also noted that in the 2024 general election, the NPP lost about 2.1 million votes due to anger among grassroots members and some delegates.
According to the MP, research and polls support Kennedy Agyapong as a pillar of peace for the party. He added that if Kennedy Agyapong wins the primaries, all former “gurus” who left the party will return, strengthening their chances of winning the 2028 election.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
Voting will take place across 333 constituency centers nationwide and at the party’s national headquarters.
Five aspirants have been duly nominated and cleared to contest the primary:
-
Ken Ohene Agyapong (Former MP for Assin Central)
-
Dr. Bryan Acheampong (MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture)
-
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (Former Vice President)
-
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Former Minister of Education)
-
Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (Former NPP General Secretary)
