We Will Continue to Fight the Case; Withdrawal of Charges Does Not Alter Our Not Guilty Plea” – Wontumi’s Lawyer
Wontumi’s Defence Team Reaffirms Innocence Despite AG Withdrawing Charges Against Fourth Accused in Akonta Mining Case

- Wontumi’s lawyer says the withdrawal of charges against the fourth accused does not affect their “not guilty” plea
- The defence vows to continue fighting the case and maintain a fair legal process
- Lawyer questions AG’s reliance on a former accused to assist prosecution
The defense team of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says it remains steadfast in asserting his innocence despite the Attorney General’s decision to withdraw charges against one of the accused in the Akonta Mining case.
Speaking after court proceedings, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, said the dismissal of charges against Edward Akuoko, the fourth accused, does not alter their defense strategy or position.
“We have just been served with the notice of withdrawal of the fourth accused person. They have every right to do so under the rules of court. It doesn’t change our position. We are not guilty,” Mr. Kubi stated.
He stressed that Wontumi and his team are fully prepared to continue the case and will “prosecute the case religiously in the best of our professional expertise.”
The lawyer also cautioned against any interference in the judicial process, reminding the Attorney General of his duty to uphold justice and equality before the law. He questioned the decision to use a former accused as a tool in prosecuting others, suggesting it could undermine public confidence in the legal system.
“The way the Attorney General appears to be poaching his own accused persons suggests there is intent to undermine the course of justice. We will resist the oppressor’s rule,” Mr. Kubi added.
The Attorney General’s office formally withdrew charges against Mr. Akuoko under Section 59 of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30), discharging him from prosecution.
The case, which also involves Akonta Mining Limited, its co-director Kwame Antwi, Operations Manager Kwadwo Owusu Bempah, and Chairman Wontumi, centers on alleged illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, including unlicensed operations, tree felling, and construction within the protected area.
The matter has been adjourned to November 12 and December 4 for further hearing.
