- Armed bandits attacked a police station and United Methodist Church in Agwara, using dynamite to destroy the police post
- Five residents were kidnapped during the raid, adding to the region’s history of mass abductions, including 300 children last November
- The attack underscores Nigeria’s ongoing insurgency, which has claimed over 40,000 lives
Armed bandits launched a coordinated assault on a police station and a church in Agwara early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
The attackers overpowered a tactical team and used dynamite to burn down the police station. They then moved on to the United Methodist Church, setting the sacred building ablaze.
During the raid, five civilians were abducted, adding to the district’s ongoing trauma from previous mass kidnappings. The Agwara region is still reeling from the abduction of 300 children last November.
This latest attack highlights the persistent security crisis in Nigeria, which has resisted both international efforts and local military interventions.
Meanwhile, Nigerian military forces reported a tactical victory in Borno State, where they killed Abu Khalid, a high-ranking Boko Haram commander operating in the dense Sambisa Forest. The raid reportedly involved no military casualties, although rival factions have recently claimed dozens of lives this week.
Over the course of the decade-long insurgency, more than 40,000 people have died, leaving a profound and somber impact on Africa’s most populous nation.
