U-Turn in Ablekuma North: NPP Reverses Boycott, Rallies Support for Rerun After Court Ruling

After an initial boycott and legal challenge, the NPP returns to the campaign trail in Ablekuma North, determined to reclaim what it calls a rightful victory in the hotly contested parliamentary rerun.

  • Party confident of victory as supporters hit the ground ahead of July 11 vote

Despite an initial vow to boycott, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially launched its campaign ahead of the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency, scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025.

The rerun, affecting 19 polling stations, was mandated by the Electoral Commission following disputes over the December 2024 election results. The NPP had previously rejected the EC’s decision, maintaining that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had won with a margin of 414 votes.

However, after the Accra High Court dismissed Afriyie’s legal bid to stop the rerun, the party reversed course and rejoined the electoral process. At a press briefing on July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s belief in Afriyie’s victory and expressed determination not to be intimidated.

Citi News reporter Fauzu Masawudu confirmed active campaigning on the ground, with supporters energized by the fact that Afriyie’s photo remains on the ballot.

With political tensions still simmering, Friday’s rerun promises to be a fiercely contested showdown.
